What is the Nissan EV plan for 2023 and beyond?
No one can argue the fact that Nissan is a pioneer of the EV game. While electric vehicles have technically been around for decades in some capacity – even dating all the way back to 1902, technically speaking – modern battery-electric vehicles have only recently begun advancing in technology and becoming mainstream. The company introduced the Nissan LEAF all the way back in 2010, and it is currently the oldest electric vehicle still in production. So, what does Nissan have planned for 2023 and beyond? Let’s find out.
New Nissan Hybrid & EV Inventory
What is the brand’s long-term electrification plan?
You might already be aware of the brand-new Nissan Ariya, a battery-electric SUV joining the lineup in the 2023 model year. The introduction of this model will bring the Nissan EV range up to two models, but Nissan has announced it intends to have eight total BEVs on the road by the end of 2023. That means the brand intends to announce six more over the next couple of years. While the company didn’t cite a year, executives also stated it intends to be selling a million hybrid or electric vehicles annually in the near future.
2023 Nissan Ariya Electric SUV
While the Nissan LEAF isn’t going anywhere, the brand’s future plans where EVs are concerned kick off with the Nissan Ariya. This brand-new, all-electric SUV joins the lineup during the 2023 model year, arriving sometime in the fall of 2022. It will be very diverse, offering a host of options for shoppers to choose from, including two different battery packs, two different electric motor configurations and many different trim levels.
When the vehicle launches, four trim levels will be offered initially. The base model will be the 2023 Nissan Ariya Venture+. This model will feature a front-wheel-drive system powered by a single electric motor, as well as the long-range 91-kWh battery pack. The model will be able to generate up to 238 horsepower and travel up to 300 miles on a single full charge. The Ariya Evolve+ and Premiere are next in line, featuring the same battery and electric motor but a slightly shorter driving range of 285 miles.
The top-tier trim level available at launch will be the 2023 Nissan Ariya Platinum+, featuring the dual-motored e-4ORCE all-wheel control system and the long-range 91-kWh battery pack. This model will be able to generate 389 horsepower but only travel up to 265 miles on a single charge.
Any other hints at the future of Nissan EVs?
Specific information regarding any other electric vehicles joining the Nissan lineup in 2023 or beyond is scarce, but the brand did recently unveil a number of electric concept vehicles. These concept cars included an electric truck, convertible, Cube-like crossover and another crossover a bit smaller than the Ariya. The concept cars were named Surf-Out, Max-Out, Hang-Out and Chill-Out respectively. All of these concept cars adopt rather futuristic designs, which means they’re likely pretty far away from any potential production models that might follow.
We expect information and announcements to ramp up in the months to come if Nissan plans to meet its initial goal of eight models by the end of 2023, so be sure to check back often for further updates.
