What is a weight-distribution trailer hitch?
The recommended type of trailer hitch for half-ton trucks like the Nissan Titan is a weight-distribution hitch, at least if you’re going to be towing more than 5,000 pounds. A traditional bumper hitch is fine if you’re never going to tow more than that amount of weight, but that’s pretty unlikely considering you purchased a truck approaching a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. So, with that in mind, we definitely recommend simply opting to install a weight-distribution trailer hitch.
The purpose of a weight-distribution hitch is to restore the front-axle load, thus eliminating the decrease in stability that would otherwise be caused by trailering such a large amount of weight with a regular bumper hitch and thus making it safer for you to tow. It does this by adding equalizer bars to the hitch, extending out from the tongue to the frame of the trailer and thus distributing the weight more evenly.
While we don’t have a recommendation of a brand or anything like that, we definitely want to recommend getting a weight-distribution hitch of your own. However, there is one more thing to keep in mind. In order to make sure you’re utilizing the proper weight-distribution hitch and making your trailering experience as safe and stable as possible, you need to pay attention to the FALR recommendations of both the hitch that you choose and of your truck.
Make sure that you look in the owner’s manuals of both your Titan and whichever trailer hitch you end up purchasing to ensure that you set the appropriate FALR, which is the percentage of weight distributed back to the front axle. You don’t want to distribute too much or too little, so once you equip your hitch you’ll want to adjust the FALR so that it meets the recommendations of both.
Hopefully, this has helped you figure out what kind of trailer hitch to purchase for your Nissan Titan. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us here at Nissan of Auburn.
