Could the next-generation Nissan Frontier come with a diesel engine?

January 20th, 2014 by

So we’ve been excited for some time about the optional diesel engine available on the next Nissan Titan. The 5.0-liter Cummins diesel engine under the hood will make the Titan a real draw for many in the segment. And the timing is especially good for Nissan, considering the fact that the Ram brand recently introduced an EcoDiesel engine on the 1500 which has received a lot of positive attention.

Nissan Frontier Diesel could be in the works

While we are waiting for the arrival of the Nissan Titan Diesel, we are also hearing rumors of diesel engines being offered in other Nissan products – primarily the Nissan Frontier. Nissan Senior VP of U.S. Sales Fred Diaz more than hinted that a Nissan Frontier Diesel could be in the works. While he said that was one of the powertrains being considered, we could definitely see this becoming a reality.

The small truck market seems to be making a resurgence, and the addition of a Nissan Frontier Diesel would make a lot of sense. And again, like the Titan Diesel, this comes on the heels of another major automaker announcing a diesel powertrain for a small truck. General Motors has said that a diesel will be offered on the new 2016 Colorado – a sure competitor of the next-generation Nissan Frontier.

Other hints toward the inclusion of a Nissan Frontier with a diesel engine have come at Nissan events – like the Nissan 360 event where there was a Nissan Navara with a 2.5-liter turbodiesel engine. The Navara is essentially a Frontier sold on a global scale, so you can see how this could easily become a reality.

We’ll have to wait and see on this one, but as always, we’ll be sure to keep you up on the happenings. Keep it tuned here for the latest information on the next-gen Nissan Frontier and Nissan Titan.
