WardsAuto is an illustrious automotive trade magazine that has been published since 1924. They are best known for their Ward’s 10 Best Engines, which started in 1994. They test only new vehicles with a base price of less than $65,000. Each vehicle is tested for two months and scored based on typical, everyday driving scenarios with zero instrumented testing. Wards looks at power, torque, noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), among other things. In 2020, due to the rise of electric vehicles, the name was changed to Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems.

Wards 10 Best

For 2023, the Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE was named one of the 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems by Wards, thanks to its excellent usability and drivability in everyday conditions. While it isn’t just about off-the-line speed, the overall smoothness and stability of e-4ORCE make it a clear winner.

What The Testers Said

“e-4ORCE provides great drivability for a family vehicle. It’s not just about strong launch, but also in higher-speed passing maneuvers where some BEVs can feel a little weak,” said Drew Winter, WardsAuto contributing editor and Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems judge. “This is a strong and technically competent family vehicle that offers consumers an impressive mix of power and range options.”

“The Ariya is a revelation in Sport mode with a floored accelerator,” said Christie Schweinsberg, Wards’ intelligence analyst and Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems judge. “‘Wow’ is all I can say about the gravitational force exerted on my face and neck. It moves pretty darn fast in Standard and Eco modes too. The Ariya is so quiet and smooth, and acceleration so linear, that you can quickly exceed the speed limit if you’re not careful.”

What Is e-4ORCE

The Nissan Ariya with e-4ORCE technology uses dual-electric motors that deliver power and torque to all four wheels. The Engage and Engage+ e-4ORCE trim levels have a 66 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack with 335 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. At the same time, Evolve+ and Platinum+ e-4ORCE models a 91 kWh Lithium-ion battery that outputs 389 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. All four models have a range of 289 miles on a full charge. The 4 in 4ORCE stands for All-wheel drive.

Charging Speeds

A Level 2 home charging system can charge the 66 kWh battery from 0-100% capacity in 10.5 hours and 14 hours for the 91 kWh battery. A 50 kW fast charger will take 65 minutes to get you from 10 to 80% for the 66 kWh models and 90 minutes for the 91 kWh. If you find a charging station that charges at 130 kW or more, the 66 kWh Nissan Ariya will go from 10-80% in just 35 minutes and 40 minutes for the 91 kWh Ariya.
