What is the J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study?
The Initial Quality Study (IQS) is based on a survey of what new owners think of their vehicles after the first 90 days of purchase or lease. Owners or lessees report on their impression of the initial quality in 223 points over nine categories:
- Infotainment
- Features, Controls, and Displays
- Exterior
- Driving Assistance
- Interior
- Powertrain
- Seats
- Driving Experience
- Climate
After Nissan made an aggressive shift to focusing on customer satisfaction and vehicle quality, it’s no wonder that two models scored high – the Murano and Maxima. Vice President of Total Customer Satisfaction James Moss noted his satisfaction with the results; after all, customers seek out brands with a great reputation, and that’s precisely what Nissan has built for itself over the years.
Nissan Murano: Best Midsize SUV
Winning for the fourth year in a row in its segment, the Nissan Murano came back for 2023 with features and designs that pleased drivers from the first impression and well beyond. This year’s model displays a sculpted exterior with a V-motion grille and new brand logo at the forefront. A powerful yet efficient 3.5L V6 engine is designed to be responsive to your every move with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive at the ready. Inside, an elegant and functional interior features connectivity, comfort, and safety at every turn. Those surveyed loved the details like semi-aniline leather seating with dark wood-tone trim. The standout feature is Nissan Safety Shield 360, a suite of advanced safety and driver assist technologies that includes Lane Departure Warning, Intelligent Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, and an Intelligent Around View Monitor. All of that starting at just $33,680 and you can see why drivers ranked Murano the best in its segment.

As much fun to drive as it is to look at, the Maxima impressed drivers with its amped-up performance. Featuring a 300-horsepower 3.5L V6, the Maxima comes with a Drive Mode Selector that can be tailored to your mood or the road conditions.
