A Week With The Nissan Altima SR
Recently, the Detroit Bureau spent a week with the 2023 Nissan Altima SR, the sport sedan with a budget-friendly attitude and economy car efficiency.
Engine and Drive Type
The Nissan Altima SR features a 2.0-liter Turbocharged Inline-4 that makes 248 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque that is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and comes in either Front-wheel drive or Intelligent All-wheel drive. The SR starts at $27,930 in FWD trim, while the AWD model starts at $29,430.
The Intelligent AWD system can put up to 100% of the power to the front wheels, or have 50% go to the front and rear simultaneously. This way, the tires with the most grip and traction get the maximum power and torque available.
Styling
The Executive Editor, Joseph Szczesny, described the styling of the Altima SR by saying, “The low-slung 2023 Altima is sleek and looks as if it could knife through the air with its sharp lines, sleek roofline, which bends back to the rear of the vehicle, which serves to the underscores its clean profile.” That is high praise since it competes against the likes of the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, and Honda Accord.
Fuel Economy
Fuel mileage has become an essential part of car buying, especially with sporty cars. Long gone are the days when you could have a sports car get mediocre mileage and be considered a good value proposition. The Nissan Altima SR doesn’t have that problem, as it can return 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, respectively. But sportiness is still at the top of the list for the SR, and that is what customers want.
Detroit Bureau Driving Impressions
“… the on-road performance of the Altima was excellent. It has a favorable power-to-weight ratio and ample kick while passing or moving from a standing start. The sporty suspension on the Altima SR lines up well with performance, giving the car a solid feel over different road surfaces and it hugs the road going around curves. It also has accurate steering and nice solid brakes. With the coming of electric vehicles, the discussion around fuel economy has shifted dramatically. But for a car with a mid-sized car with an internal combustion engine the Altima delivers good if not great performance.”
Safety Is Standard
Safety is just one more area where the Nissan Altima SR shines. Every Altima comes standard with Nissan Safety Shield 360. It includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and High Beam Assist. Also standard on all models are class-exclusive Intelligent Forward Collision Warning and Intelligent Driver Alertness
